December 22, 2021 | Austin, Texas | Press release

Governor Greg Abbott today ordered the Texas Emergency Management Division (TDEM) to prepare resources for the high critical danger forest fire conditions in the Texas Panhandle, Southern Plains and Western Texas. These resources will support the response of local authorities to forest fires if they exceed the local response capacities.

The Texas A&M Forest Service is warning that high to critical fire weather is forecast for the Panhandle, Southern Plains and West Texas today through Sunday, December 26. The combination of critical fire time and dry to extremely dry fuels will support increased forest fire activity. The greatest potential for wildfire activity will be on Friday, December 24, as strong winds, above normal temperatures and low humidity align with the dry fuel to produce significant fire potential.

“Texas is fully prepared to respond to any potential wildfire activity that may occur this week in our state,” Gov. Abbott said. “We will continue to monitor weather conditions and encourage Texans to follow the advice of their local authorities, and we thank our firefighters and emergency response personnel who are working away from their families this Christmas season to ensure the safety of our communities. ”

The following resources have been deployed by the Texas A&M Forest Service: 6 Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS) response teams, including 82 firefighters and 25 fire trucks; a fire extinguisher module, including 7 people; two large tank planes; three single-engine tankers (SEATS); and an air attack aerial surveillance aircraft. An additional 118 firefighters and an Emergency Medical Force (EMTF) Wilderness Support Unit are on standby to deploy if necessary.
