Fiat is one of the most prestigious automobile manufacturers in the world, and they have been manufacturing cars since 1899. The company had a rich heritage of not only making some of the best automobiles in the world, but also having a racing lineage. The company has had a difficult time in North America since the start of production and has faced some market challenges. Speaking of the 2018 Fiat 124 spider, this name was first used by Fiat in 1966.
The Fiat Spider resulted from a joint venture between Fiat and Mazda as the vehicle was based on the very delicious Mazda Miata. The joint venture evolved with many modern European technologies and features, combined with incredible Japanese engineering that built the Miata’s strong chassis. The biggest point of differentiation between the Miata and the Spider was that the Spider used a turbocharged engine, which gave some work in the pants feel while driving.
Fiat 124 Spider S-Design: stellar Italian style
The design of the Fiat spider has been improved and European, but if you look at it closely, you can see the resemblance between the Spider and the Mazda Miata. The vehicle design was shown at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show and launched as a new variant of the Fiat 124 Spider. The vehicle’s iconic low stance and two-door silhouette are carried forward; moreover, the best styling and sharper design elements have been trimmed. The car shares its chassis and frame with the Miata; even so, almost every body panel is different and better styled. The Spider is more extended, in terms of proportions, slightly than the Miata. Starting from the front of the vehicle, it has an original design for the LED DRL, which houses the projector headlight. Further down the bumper there are fog lights which also come with a cornering function and some black accents around. The all-black grille features a split design with a body-color panel separating them.
The automobile’s front hood is a throwback to the 1966 Fiat Spider, as it features two U-shaped design elements that are etched into the hood. The S Design Pack adds features and styling elements to the interior and exterior of the vehicle, enhancing the level of luxury and comfort. The wheel design is also exclusive to the S line as it features all-black 17-inch wheels. From the side, the car has a metallic gray finish on the A-pillar of the vehicle and on the side mirror caps, which contrast well with the car. The only painful angle of the vehicle is when viewed from the rear three-quarters of the right side as the large radio antenna protrudes and makes it look out of place, almost like it’s a remote control car. The rear lights are a classic Fiat design and what’s interesting about them is that they have a body-coloured panel between them, making them distinctive and stylish. The taillights are all LED units, and they also have integrated turn signals. The vehicle provides a dual-port exhaust placed at each end of the bumpers, and the bumper has the reverse light and rear fog light in the lower half of it.
Fiat 124 Spider S-Design: better engine tuning
Under the hood, the vehicle has an entirely different engine than the Mazda Miata as it uses a turbocharged unit. It has a 1.4 liter engine, and it is the same engine found in the Fiat 500 but given an extra boost. The vehicle produces 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharger produces nearly 22 pounds of boost, and all of its power is sent to the rear wheels like a classic Roadster. The car was offered with either a 6-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission and was as light as a feather, weighing just 2500 pounds. It does a 0-60 MPH in just 7.5 seconds and a top speed of nearly 135 MPH.
Fiat 124 Spider S-Design: tech-savvy
The interior of the vehicle was quite minimal but loaded with all the necessary equipment and technology. The car featured a 7-inch touchscreen with navigation and multimedia features, as well as a 9-speaker Bose audio system whose speakers were integrated into the headers. The vehicle also featured automatic climate control as well as cruise control, and the center console also featured a drive mode selector. Also, the switch layout was quite similar to the Mazda Miata, and the controls were easy to use and fell to hand.
Overall, the Fiat 124 Spider was a great sports car with better styling appeal than the Miata. The addition of the S design pack made it very sleek and drool-worthy.
