Favorite Mo Donegal led an exact double for trainer Todd Pletcher and co-owner Mike Repole in beating stablemate Nest in the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday.
It was Belmont’s first victory for Repole, a New York native and founder of Under Armour, and co-owner Donegal Racing. For Pletcher, it was his fourth victory in the last jewel of the Triple Crown. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. rode Mo Donegal to claim his second victory in the Belmont Stakes.
Sent off at 5-2, Mo Donegal raced through the middle of the pack throughout as morning line favorite We The People drove ahead through splits of 23.99, 48.49 and 1: 13.23 over six stadiums. We The People, who were stalked by Skippylongstocking up front, continued to lead after a mile in 1:37.74 before starting to lose momentum at the quarter pole.
Meanwhile, Mo Donegal and Nest were each preparing to exit turn two. The two kicked off their rallies with Mo Donegal clearly sailing on the outside, while filly Nest had to wait behind the horses before heading into the race hall. She couldn’t catch the winner. Mo Donegal continued hard to win in a final time of 2:28.28 for 1 1/2 miles on a fast track.
Nest was followed on the wire by Skippylongstocking with We The People holding fourth place. Mo Donegal returned $7.20.
