Within the framework of the European Commission Roma Policy Framework for Equality, Inclusion and Participation, each European Member State (except Malta) is required to implement a National Roma Strategic Framework (NRSF). This should have been done by September 2021, but many Member States were unable to meet this deadline. The Roma Coordination Unit of DG JUST gave the opportunity to civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations to provide them with comments and recommendations on these NRSF. The Commission will provide Member States with its own comments in autumn 2022.
The Roma Health Network gratefully accepted the opportunity to provide feedback to the Commission and submitted its recommendations to the Roma Coordination Unit on March 11, 2022. All NRSFs that have been published have been reviewed, particular attention being given to the Health and Lodging strategy sections. Thanks to the contribution of the Roma Health Network, the NRSFs of Greece, Ireland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and the candidate countries North Macedonia and Turkey were analysed. Some of the main conclusions of the network revolve around the definition of clear objectives, the strengthening of the capacities of Roma communities and civil society, increased attention to the promotion of mental health, knowledge of the disproportionate effects of COVID-19 on Roma and recommendations for more effective monitoring of Roma. health.
