Maserati Grecale is an elegant European SUV with precise rendering

0

[ad_1]

The Maserati Levante may not have the characteristics of a Mercedes or the interior design of an Audi. But it was successful enough that the Italians developed a smaller version. Enter the Grecale, which is placed at the bottom of the manufacturer’s future range of cars.

The idea of a Maserati SUV Seemed controversial at first, but that was before the Lamborghini Urus and the Bentley Bentayga. These days all big companies are expected to offer a high-rider, and many of them go pretty fast as well.

Like the Levante, the Grecale will be unlike anything you’ve ever owned … unless you already have the Ghibli. The styling is also going to be quite interesting, based on these renderings.

Maserati is eager to launch the Grecale and has released several teasers. Based on the camouflaged prototypes they showed, the Russian site Kolesa was able to create these renderings, which we believe to be accurate representations of the model.

The best way to describe this mini SUV is to say that it is a mixture of European elements. For example, the front has a Mercedes-style bumper with a grille that looks like frowns and deep side air intakes. As for the headlights, they resemble those of the Ford Puma and the Jaguar E-Pace.

The rear is a little more French. The soft trunk and hips are reminiscent of the old DS4 hatchback. Of course, all of these are also designed to look like the larger Levante.

Technical details are a bit rarer, but the Grecale is believed to be based on the Giorgio platform, which feels like the most Italian thing ever. This also underpins the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and should mean that the engines can and probably will be shared among themselves.

That means the 2.0-liter turbo and its 280 horsepower could play a big part, but a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 is also on the table. The power of over 500 hp could explain why the Grecale prototype had so many exhaust tips (four).

Of course, the premium car market is heavily geared towards electrification. Ghibli Hybrid launched last year to be joined by first Maserati VE, based on the new GranTurismo. The Grecale is therefore very likely to have a few hybrid or plug-in versions with a fully electric model also on the cards.

The CDADI has adopted an Intercultural Integration Strategy Framework

0

The Committee against Discrimination, Diversity and Inclusion (CDADI), at its third plenary meeting, adopted a Model framework for an intercultural integration strategy which aims to serve as a basis for national intercultural integration strategies based on human rights standards.

The model framework is based on the successful experience of nearly 150 intercultural cities in Europe and around the world, and on best practices in some Council of Europe member states, promoting inclusion, community cohesion and l advantage of diversity. It is therefore a tool for practitioners and policy makers working in the field of diversity and inclusion.

The document further describes the requirements which derive from the standards and values to which the member states of the Council of Europe conform and which should underpin intercultural integration strategies. It also provides a menu of policy measures that can help meet these demands.

The adoption of this document, in time for the International Refugee Day (June 20) is of symbolic importance to underline the need for all states and cities in Europe to adopt the intercultural approach to the inclusion of migrants and refugees.

Delgado has visions of the Breeders Cup for the Critical Track – Horse Racing News

The Critical Way with Paco Lopez on horseback wins the Get Serious Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Coach Jose Delgado was so impressed with what he saw of his fast-paced The Critical Way turf sprinter on Saturday at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, NJ that he immediately started plotting a schedule that would bring the 7-year-old gelding at the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint on November 6.

It’s not just that The Critical Way won the $ 75,000 Get Serious Stakes with ease, pulling away for a three-length victory. This is how he won the feature film on grass.

Known for his blazing early-in-game speed, The Critical Way sat on the flanks of an even faster French reef, scoring an opening quarterback in a dazzling time of: 20.11 and a half in: 43 , 34. Jockey Paco Lopez eased The Critical Way around French Reef entering the final corner and Tizway’s son took off, showing off a finishing kick that can sometimes escape him when he’s up front.

The final time for all five stages on a turf classified as “firm” was: 55.19.

“We still think this horse is ahead from the start because he has a lot of speed,” said Delgado, who leads the Monmouth Park coaches standings with 11 wins. “But Paco Lopez told me he was very comfortable getting out of the rhythm. It’s a new dimension for him. We still think it’s one way and it’s go, go, go. Now we have seen that he can sit behind the speed and make a move and he can win that way. I like this.

“We saw that he could sit comfortably. It gives us a lot of options. He’s very consistent. He gives you everything he has. We’re going to see some serious stuff for him now. Maybe we’ll try something in Saratoga, then a race or two in Parx and then if all goes well we’ll try to take him to the Breeders’ Cup. This is the plan. It is hope.

Lopez said The Critical Way “didn’t break like it usually does.”

“Usually he’s right out the door and in the lead,” Lopez said. “I think he got a little scared and jumped behind (French Reef). I know this horse from having seen it in Florida. He is a very fast horse. So I was behind that one but he was very comfortable, which surprised me because it’s something new for him.

“I arrived thinking I would take the lead, but I had to follow plan B. But the horse made it easy for me with his comfort. He was near. It’s not like he’s far away. So when I asked him, he just took off.

After being caught on the wire in their last Turf Sprint Stakes start at Pimlico on the Preakness Stakes map, The Critical Way notched their fourth win in stakes and eighth overall win in 25 career starts for Monster Racing Stables . He paid $ 3.80 to win.

French Reef held second place, 1¼ lengths ahead of Francatelli.

You can own the source code of the World Wide Web! Berners-Lee will auction it as NFT

0

[ad_1]

You can now purchase the original source code for the World Wide Web, written by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, at an auction starting at $ 1,000. Berners-Lee will auction the source code signed by him as an NFT or non-fungible token at an auction by Sotheby’s.

The NFT will be offered in a stand-alone online auction titled “This Has Changed Everything”. The London-born computer scientist invented the World Wide Web in 1989, revolutionizing the sharing and creation of information in what is considered one of the most important inventions since the emergence of printing in Europe in the 15th century. century in Germany.

“The NFT – totally unique on the Ethereum blockchain – is made up of four elements; the original time-stamped files containing the source code written by Sir Tim; an animated visualization of the code; a letter written by Sir Tim reflecting on the code and the process of creation; as well as a digital “poster” of the complete code created by Sir Tim from the original files using Python, including a graphic of his physical signature; all digitally signed, “Sotheby’s said in a statement .

The files referenced by the NFT contain code of approximately 9,555 lines, the content of which includes implementations of the three languages and protocols invented by Berners-Lee that remain fundamental to the World Wide Web today – HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) , HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), and URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers), as well as original HTML documents that taught early web users how to use the application.

The auction will open June 23-30, with auctions starting at $ 1,000, and will benefit initiatives supported by Berners-Lee and his wife.

NFTs have exploded in popularity in recent months, including at auction. A digital-only work of art by American artist Mike Winkelmann, known as Beeple, sold for almost $ 70 million at Christie’s in March.

“Why an NFT? Well, it’s a natural thing to do like when you’re a computer scientist and when you’ve been writing code for many years. It seems fair to me to digitally sign my autograph on a fully digital artifact, ”Beners-Lee was quoted as saying in the release.

Welcome to Industry 4.0: How cloud platforms are ushering in the new era of manufacturing

0

[ad_1]

For hundreds of years, manufacturing has been a driving force behind opportunity, progress and growth. From the mechanization of the first industrial revolution to mass production and automated assembly, manufacturing innovation has moved the world forward. Our industry has fundamentally defined the way people work and live.

Today we are on the brink of the next wave of industrial progress. Manufacturing in the cloud – the software and infrastructure that enables manufacturing over networks – offers a leap forward, transforming the way we produce goods and addressing long-term challenges like visibility over networks. factory operations and slow production.

Just as manufacturing began to take advantage of microprocessors for control and automation in the 1970s and 1980s, today we can use vast computing power to speed up and improve manufacturing. Like the industry innovations that came before it, cloud platforms aren’t just changing what is possible to manufacture, they are changing the way we do it. Here’s how cloud manufacturing is revolutionizing collaboration and communication across the supply chain.

Unite creators and designers

Manufacturing is one of the biggest challenges in manufacturing. In the traditional system, design engineers navigate the process of creating a beautiful product, only to learn that it is impossible to manufacture when they try to get it produced. Since these two processes (design and manufacture) are separate, designers have little information about plant capabilities and manufacturing processes, while manufacturers have no idea of the intentions or goals of designers.

Cloud manufacturing bridges that gap. These two critical groups don’t have to work in isolation – and improved communication means better products, faster deadlines. Now designers can upload designs and receive immediate feedback on what’s possible, including constructive feedback on material, part geometry, and more. Instant communication opens up more tools for designers while helping manufacturers understand product goals and optimize parts for production.

Acceleration of manufacturing

Cloud manufacturing can combine with additive manufacturing capabilities to take our industry to a new level, introducing unprecedented speed and elasticity. Traditionally, the journey from design to production has been slow. Product development can take months or even years due to the huge gap between prototyping and production. The underlying processes and infrastructure used in prototyping are very different from those used in production, preventing easy handoffs.

With cloud-based additive manufacturing, you can prototype using the same processes and infrastructure used in production. Rapid prototyping allows you to test designs as you go. Prototyping and production take place in the same system, which means you don’t have to start over after building a prototype because you are working with the same technology and materials that you will use to make the final product. This seamless transfer allows for rapid iteration, allowing you to test production issues early in the process to avoid delays later.

Revolutionizing knowledge management

Getting a product to market is a long journey. From concept to prototype to scale-up to production and execution, nailing every step takes time. But traditionally, much of the knowledge hard gained on this journey goes unrecorded or retained, and it can be difficult to transfer that knowledge to new products.

Cloud manufacturing allows you to monitor and record every step of the way, so you can improve your product with each new design iteration. Collecting data from concept to completion allows you to connect the dots and make smarter decisions about the entire product lifestyle.

With the knowledge and understanding of the design choices that produce the best manufacturing results, we can make better decisions about the design and manufacture of future products. Cloud manufacturing enables a library of digital designs and production data that can show us what works and why. Now when we design or manufacture something new, we don’t have to start from scratch.

Enter a new era

Manufacturing has a bright future, and that future is now being played out with cloud manufacturing. Companies that embrace new ideas and adapt to changing technology have always been the ones that stand out. As our world evolves to take advantage of the latest manufacturing technologies, the winners of this era will be those who have the most transformational and innovative solutions to improve digital connectivity and production. Manufacturing in the cloud kicks off this journey, creating new opportunities for you to seize.

The source code of Algorand Wallet is now open source

0

[ad_1]

In a recent blog post, it was announced that Algorand’s official wallet is now open-source and its codebase has been made publicly available, allowing the crypto community to develop and deliver features on its release. artwork.

“We are delighted to announce that Algorand Wallet’s official codebase has been open source and is now publicly available, adding that developers can now access its repository through the main organization GitHub,” said the protocol team.

“Open source” is the term used to refer to a form of software distribution where the source code is made public and available to anyone who wants it. Programmers can then read or modify the code if they wish. He is directly opposed to “closed source” where everything that happens behind the scenes cannot be seen by the public.

Algorand and his worries

A high-speed blockchain, Algorand relies on a two-tier structure and a unique variant of the Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism to increase its transaction speeds and achieve block finality.

It is considered to be one of the first large-cap crypto projects capable of giving staking capabilities to holders who simply need to hold a minimum amount of ALGO in their supported wallets to take advantage of the staking rewards.

However, the project has been criticized because its official wallet was closed-source, opposing the general principle of blockchain protocols to be community-governed, decentralized and free from censorship.

Algorand goes open source

According to Ian Cross, developer at Algorand, the goal of their portfolio is to give their community a safe, reliable, convenient and powerful way to interact with the products of the Algorand ecosystem and its blockchain network.

“As part of this mission, we believe that making our code open source is critical to the success of the project,” he said.

The update implemented by the team was in response to one of the biggest requests from the community and has so far garnered a favorable response in social forums.

Call for a European legislative framework more favorable to innovation in food additives

0

A round table, as part of the professional body’s Future Proofing Feed event, recognized the role that feed additives can play in terms of reducing environmental emissions generated by the production of farm animals, but also in terms of improving animal health and welfare, thereby reducing the need for antimicrobials.

Speakers included Eva Zamora, Head of the Animal Nutrition and Veterinary Medicines Unit of the European Commission DG Health, Séverine Deschandelliers, President of FEFANA, Dirk Ehle, member of the Board of Directors of Animal Health Europe, and Reinder Sijtsma, president of the FEFAC premix. and the Mineral Nutrition Committee.

Panelists stressed the importance of stimulating innovation in food additive development through private / public and multidisciplinary partnerships, and the implicit gains in knowledge transfer from other sectors such as human health.

Participants also agreed that an effective legal framework for food additives allowing an environment where there was less administrative burden, better market protection for applicants for food additives, a new recognized functionality of these products in terms of welfare and environmental protection, and regulations that allow the scientifically proven effects of additives to be communicated to end users would stimulate further innovation in this regard.

A second round table, with Michael Scannell, Deputy Director General, DG AGRI, Pekka Pesonen, Secretary General, Copa-Cogeca, Régis Fournier, President of Euroseeds and Asbjørn Børsting, President of FEFAC, discussed the revisions of the CAP, elements like voluntary coupled support, eco-programs and rural development investment programs that could help boost protein production in the EU and reduce the EU’s dependence on materials imported raw materials rich in protein.

New plant breeding techniques In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

Experts also highlighted that new technologies are essential for the EU’s agricultural sector to remain competitive and sustainable, referring to recent developments related to EU legislation on New Genomic Techniques (NGT).

Such plant breeding technology could help accelerate the EU’s protein self-sufficiency and reduce the footprint of feed production, they argued, with speakers urging EU lawmakers to introduce quickly a favorable regulatory framework that would allow industry and farmers to use this plant breeding technology. , following public consultations and impact assessments.

The EU should not isolate itself internationally in this regard given the more favorable environment for innovation leveraging NGT elsewhere, they stressed.

Raw material supply In addition to this, you will need to know more about it.

Michael Scannell, DG AGRI, stressed that feed manufacturers would also be well advised to promote sustainable sourcing practices and the traceability of feed materials to meet the increasingly stringent demands of retailers. and consumers in terms of traceability.

He noted the new initiatives planned by the EU: the next Code of conduct for responsible business and marketing practicesIn addition to this, you will need to know more about it.In the food chain and mandatory due diligence measures,With a focus on deforestation-free supply chains.

FEFAC President Asbjørn Børsting said the trade group’s recently revised 2021 Soybean Sourcing Guidelines (SSG) now include the ability to compare the verification and certification program to ‘no conversion’ soybeans, and this initiative should help ease the transition to a sustainable supply chain.

First, SpaceX launches a national security satellite with a booster already piloted

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket propelled a third-generation global positioning system navigation satellite into orbit Thursday during the first launch of a national security payload using a previously flown booster. Program officials say the move will save $ 64.5 million over three missions.

The nine engines on the first stage of the rocket woke up on time at 12:09 a.m. EDT, pushing the 229-foot-high rocket away from pad 40 of the Cape Canaveral space station.

After propelling the Falcon 9 out of the thick lower atmosphere, the first stage collapsed and headed for landing on a SpaceX drone parked in the Atlantic Ocean. Onboard cameras provided spectacular views as the thruster plunged toward the ground, marking SpaceX’s 66th successful recovery at sea and 88th overall.

The scene first flew last November to launch the previous GPS-3 navigation satellite, the fourth of 10 being built by Lockheed Martin for the US Space Force. While Thursday’s flight marked SpaceX’s fourth national security space launch, it was the first to use a previously stolen first stage.

“In preparation for this first event, we have worked closely with SpaceX to understand the refurbishment processes and are confident this rocket is ready for its next flight,” Walter Lauderdale, deputy mission director for the company of launch of the Space and Missile Center. , told reporters before takeoff.

Space Force officials said the fourth, fifth and sixth GPS-3 satellites were covered by a single contract that ultimately reflected a savings of $ 64.5 million through the recovery and reuse of the first stage.

The Falcon 9 booster, completing its second flight, landed on a SpaceX drone parked downstream in the Atlantic Ocean. The view from a camera mounted on the rocket can be seen to the left, as well as a view from the deck of the droneship. This was SpaceX’s 66th successful recall recovery at sea and the 88th overall.

SpaceX Webcast

With the first stage safe on the droneship, the second stage of the Falcon 9 continued to climb into orbit. A second engine running an hour later completed the ascent, paving the way for the deployment of the fifth GPS-3 satellite an hour and a half after takeoff. The new satellite will replace an earlier model launched in 2004.

Lockheed Martin is building 10 GPS-3 satellites for the Space Force and is under contract to build 22 advanced GPS-3 navigation beacons to modernize the entire constellation with state-of-the-art components.

The GPS system is based on the synchronization signals of ultra-precise atomic clocks. With more than two dozen operational GPS satellites in multiple orbital planes, at least four are above the horizon anywhere on Earth. The synchronization and position signals from the satellites allow receivers to calculate the position, altitude and speed of a user.

GPS receivers are embedded in an ever-growing number of devices, including smartphones, cars, trucks, airplanes, ships at sea, and weapon systems deployed by the military.

“Today’s constellation of GPS satellites, with its oldest satellites launched in the late 1990s or early 2000s, continue to provide very valuable services,” said Tonya Ladwig, vice president of Lockheed Martin. “But it needs new technology and modernized capabilities to meet the challenges of the future.

“It’s not an upgrade,” she said of the GPS-3 family. “We have developed an entirely new satellite design. GPS-3 is now the most powerful and durable GPS satellite ever built. We offer three times the accuracy of existing satellites in the constellation and have eight times the anti-jamming capabilities.

The GPS-3 satellites also feature improved civilian signals, compatibility with other satellite navigation systems and enhanced search and rescue capabilities, as well as a more accurate and jam-proof military channel.

“GPS has grown to become a part of our critical national infrastructure,” Ladwig said. “Our financial markets, our transportation systems, our utilities, the ridesharing industry, and our agriculture and construction industries all depend on the accuracy of navigation and the timing of GPS.”

Over 4 billion users worldwide use the precise position and timing signals of GPS satellites to provide directions, tracking and many other services.

“In the United States alone, GPS is estimated to generate more than $ 300 billion in annual economic benefits,” Ladwig said. “This represents more than $ 1.4 trillion since its inception.”

Tony Vitello is really recruiting us all

0

[ad_1]

In case you were wondering, yes, Tony Vitello take advantage of Omaha.

It was pretty clear during a College World Series photoshoot on Thursday, when the spirited Tennessee baseball coach hit an imaginary home run and celebrated with a bump to his chest before wearing the famous “Daddy” hat from Flights. Tournament social media folks grabbed this gem if you missed it.

Shortly after, on a Zoom call with reporters, he marveled at his large hotel suite – “that condo they gave me.”

“They must have thought I was Peyton Manning himself or someone else. Like, you see my beautiful piece of art that I have right here, ”said Vitello, turning his screen to present a painting on the wall. “I hope you will be impressed by this.”

The best salespeople, you don’t even know they’re selling you anything. You are too busy enjoying the conversation and the company.

Such a personality is a rare gift that few have.

But Vitello does.

It also doesn’t take long to notice it, to understand why he was considered one of the best recruiters in the country when Tennessee hired him in 2017. He was brought to Knoxville to do exactly what he has – inspire a lifeless program that hadn’t gained much in about a decade.

“THE FLIGHTS ARE HERE”:UT players get a seat in the College World Series

CWS DIMENSIONS:Vanderbilt favored over Texas, Tennessee – but not by much

GENTRY ESTES: A special working CWS – if only that other team weren’t there

In only its third full season, Vitello has Tennessee back to Omaha for the first time since 2005. These Flights aren’t just for fun. They are serious contenders. They’ve won 50 games and earned a national No.3 seed, one more spot than defending champion Vanderbilt, who will be on the other side of the fork.

“When we played them,” Commodores coach Tim Corbin said this Flight Week: “I think I mentioned to (my) coaches how ‘it’s going to end up being an Omaha team.’ You might just feel it. They were very aggressive, tenacious. … They deserve to be there. They are good.”

Vitello has heard the praise from Corbin. He said it meant a lot to him. He also said: “I would have liked him to come and tell me that on Sunday (after the game). Maybe I would have been in a better mood because we lost this series.

Just a perfect answer. Polished. Respectful. And yet, making a subtle point: Kind words are appreciated, of course, especially from a hugely respected coaching peer. But Corbin is a pair. Mighty Vanderbilt or not, Tennessee intended to win this series and were angry when they didn’t and would approach a rematch in Omaha the same way.

You know what I mean?

Can you believe the Vols hardly hired this guy?

Former athletic director John Currie deserves credit for hiring Vitello, an Arkansas assistant and former Missouri player who had never been a college head coach.

But he would deserve more credit if Vitello had really been his first choice. Weird now to note that South Alabama coach Mark Calvi told AL.com at the time that he had been offered and refused the position in Tennessee: “I don’t jump on anything.

Ouch.

But it was fair. It showed how bad Tennessee baseball was just a few years ago.

Vitello jumped at the chance, however. In Currie’s defense, there was only one reason to think Vitello would fare better in Knoxville than his predecessors Todd Raleigh and Dave Serrano – and it was because of the recruiter’s strength that he was meant to be.

It’s easy to assume that what has happened since has been all about recruiting and talent on the pitch. Vitello himself said on Thursday he would have expected that too up front. But looking back, “I don’t know it’s been the # 1 thing for us. I think it’s the people who work around our players.

He means Tennessee staff members, including some he inherited.

“It kind of became our niche,” Vitello told me. “I hate trying to recruit you, but it’s a people-driven program. As the facility improves, maybe our tradition grows stronger. If we can continue to be successful, these will be things or flags that we can hoist high.

“But right now, I think the flag that we carry the highest and that is the most crucial is just the people thing, the relationship agreement.”

He’s really recruiting us all, you know – you, me, his players, Vol Nation, everyone. And so far you have to say Tony Vitello is doing a great job.

Impressed ? How not to be ?

Better yet … Not having fun?

The auction house continues its foray into the world of digital assets with its upcoming standalone auction, “This Changed Everything”.

Sotheby’s to auction World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee Original time-stamped source code files, signed by him, as a non-fungible token (NFT), he announced this week.

This is the auction house’s first digital artifact to be auctioned, and it’s offered directly by Lee, who will use his proceeds to benefit causes supported by the MIT professor and his wife, Sotheby’s said. . The sale will open June 23-30, with auctions starting at $ 1,000. Sotheby’s has not designated an estimate for the lot.

Ultimate digital artifact

The source code, written in the Objective C programming language, has been open source since 1993, two years after it went live, but Sotheby’s said the auction was a chance for collectors to “own the ultimate artefact born. digitally ”.

“Until very recently, selling a digitally born artifact was not an option, but the advent of NFT has now made it possible, allowing the buyer to prove that the files offered here are the original manuscript. born digital for the greatest and most important invention of modern times, ”Sotheby’s said in the auction catalog.

The future of art

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are strings of code linked to a digital file living on the blockchain, which verify authenticity and ownership. Many collectors believe this is how digital art will be collected and marketed in the future.

The digital asset class recently went mainstream with the sale for $ 69 million of a digital collage by artist Beeple, auctioned by Christie’s to a Singapore-based collector, who paid for the work in ether.

Sotheby’s followed with its first NFT sale, which grossed $ 17.1 million from 28 digital artworks by crypto artist Pak. The auction house has also recently started accepting ethereum and bitcoin as a means of payment for physical work.

Fraudulent ‘Student Loan Relief’ calls plague borrowers

0

[ad_1]

Suppose your phone rings and the caller tells you about the Biden Student Loan Relief program, which can help you lower your monthly payments or even forgive your student loan debt. You just need to answer a few questions first.

Sounds good, right? There is only one problem: the “Biden Student Loan Relief” program does not exist.

It’s the story dozens of borrowers who shared their experiences with these scam calls on online forums, like Reddit, in the hope of getting some helpful advice.

Student debt relief scams are nothing new. In fact, consumer advocates say they were actually down thanks to a operation 2017 launched by the Federal Trade Commission, which filed suit against 36 companies that had collected more than $95 million in illegal fees.

So why are they increasing again?

Bonnie Latreille, director of research and advocacy at the Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC), says the scammers’ business model is designed to exploit financial vulnerability.

“If you target people who desperately need help, they will do anything, including give you all their information,” Latreille says. “With the pandemic, there has been unprecedented unemployment, people are struggling. So the scammers see it as an opportunity to jump in,” she adds.

Moreover, all the current talk of student debt forgiveness proposals allows scammers to take advantage of consumer confusion.

Here’s what you need to know about student debt relief scams and what to do if you fall for them.

Four common tactics used by scammers

Scammers can be sneaky, but luckily for us, they have habits too. Look for these behaviors to spot a student debt relief scam before you provide too much personal information.

The caller creates a sense of urgency

Betsy Mayotte, president and founder of The Institute of Student Loan Advisors (TISLA), says that while scam scripts can vary, one thing they all have in common is that they try to rush borrowers into sign up for their services.

“They use talking points to create a sense of urgency, like it’s on a ‘first come, first served’ basis,” Mayotte explains. The tactic puts pressure on borrowers to act quickly and also prevents them from seeking the company’s services.

Here is an example of a voicemail left by one of the scammers to a Reddit user:

“We tried to reach you because you qualify for the Federal Student Loan Forgiveness Program due to changes in 2020. It is imperative that I speak to you as soon as possible as the late student loan payment is on the point of coming to an end…”

In this case, the scammer uses phrases such as “imperative” and “as soon as possible”, in addition to referring to the current suspension of federal student loan payments, as a way to induce the borrower to act quickly and don’t miss this “opportunity”. ”

The caller promises to help you reduce your payments or get your loan balance forgiven for a ‘fee’

Although there are legit options that can help you lower your monthly paymentsthese are only accessible through your federal student loan officer, one of nine companies that the government pays to manage the federal student loan portfolio. The same goes for the student loan forgiveness.

So, if someone other than your repairer calls you to offer you lower monthly payments or a forgiveness, Mayotte advises you to hang up the phone. “If they’re offering this to you upfront, without knowing more about your situation, it’s absolutely a scam,” she adds.

If you’re having trouble making payments, you can always contact your servicer directly to see if you qualify for an income-based reimbursement plan to make your bill more manageable. Latreille of SBPC says that under these plans, your monthly payments could be as low as $0, depending on your situation.

Another way to quickly spot a scammer is to ask for money in exchange for these services.

Loan servicers “are there to help you for free,” Latreille says. “It’s never a company that says, ‘Pay us $49 a month to help,’ or whatever amount they offer.”

In other words, your student loan officer will never charge you for applying for an income-based repayment plan or student loan forgiveness program.

The caller asks for your credentials

If a company asks for your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID or password, that’s a huge red flag.

“No repairman will ever ask you that. The Ministry of Education will never ask you that,” says Mayotte.

Why? Because your service agent and the Department of Education do not need this information to access your account.

Scammers usually ask for this information to log in to your account and change your details, so the repairman cannot contact you to let you know about any issues. They may also use this information to impersonate you and suspend your loans.

During this time, you think you are making your reduced monthly payment, but in reality the company is taking all the money and nothing is going towards your student debt. “Then the loan is delinquent and they end up defaulting, and the borrower doesn’t realize that until their wages start being garnished,” Mayotte says.

The caller invites you to sign a document to act on your behalf

Some of these fake companies will ask you to sign a document authorizing them to renegotiate your student loan repayments.

They’ll even use phrases like “we take care of everything, so you don’t have to contact your repairman” to trick you into thinking it’s done for your convenience. But in reality, what you are signing is a power of attorney, giving them the right to act on your behalf, legally.

Once they have this document, they can do anything from changing your account details to consolidating your loans to forbearance. And, in the worst case scenario, they can use this power of attorney to gain access to your bank account or other sensitive information.

Tips to Protect Yourself Against a Student Loan Debt Relief Scam

If you get a call from someone offering some sort of relief program that you haven’t applied for, Latreille says the best thing to do is hang up. But if you have any doubts, she recommends asking if you can call them back before giving them information. This will give you the opportunity to research the company’s name and phone number to make sure it’s legitimate.

Mayotte also says to never share your FSA information with anyone, as the PIN can be used not only to change your information, but also to change your reimbursement plan without your knowledge.

If the company contacts you by email, be sure to check their website or company logo.

“Often they use logos that are remarkably similar to a legitimate student loan service to confuse borrowers,” Mayotte says. “I’ve seen logos for these companies that look a lot like the Ministry of Education logo,” she adds.

Finally, be careful where and with whom you share your personal and credit information.

Student loan calculator websites with poor encryption are access points for scammers to gather the information they need to design their scam, including your name, email address, phone number – and even the student loan balance. If you want to calculate your monthly payments, you can always do so by consulting the Federal Student Aid website.

If you’re applying for a credit product, make sure it’s from a company that’s been around for a long time or has a solid reputation, so your information doesn’t end up in the wrong hands.

A few years ago, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) filed a complaint against Monster Loans, a California-based mortgage lender. The lawsuit said the company used information from its customers’ credit reports to run a student debt relief scam, affecting more than seven million borrowers. The case is still pending resolution.

What to do if you think you’ve been the victim of a student loan repayment scam

The first thing you should do if you think you’ve fallen victim to one of these scams is to contact your bank or credit card company to stop any payments to that company. Latreille also says to keep an eye on your credit report to see if there’s any unusual activity. If so, contact the places where these transactions took place to dispute them immediately, so as not to damage your credit.

Then the next step is to contact your federal student loan officer to explain what happened, as they usually have procedures in place to help borrowers in these situations.

“A lot of people feel ashamed or embarrassed,” says Mayotte. “They don’t want to point it out because they feel like it makes them feel like they weren’t that smart, and that’s not the case at all.”

If you have signed a power of attorney, be sure to notify your service agent, bank, and credit card company, so they can have it revoked immediately.

Once you’ve done all of this, you should also report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission, the CFPB, or your district attorney, so they can look into it and hopefully stop this company from getting involved. scam other consumers.
