Suspected drunk driver collides with two vehicles in Wyandotte; SUV rolls over on its roof – The News Herald

A woman was fortunate enough to avoid serious injury, even death, after hitting two parked cars and then overturning her own vehicle.

The accident happened minutes before 1:30 p.m. on October 15 on 16th Street near Pennsylvania Road. Six agents intervened on the scene.

Officers found a blue Chevrolet Equinox, upside down on its roof. Police said the lone occupant, described as “dazed”, was still inside the vehicle, sitting on the roof.

Police said they immediately detected a strong smell of intoxicants emitted by the woman’s breath and that she had specific pupils.

The Equinox was deactivated and sustained significant damage to the front, sides and roof. The vehicle’s front and side airbags have inflated.

Members of the Wyandotte Fire Department arrived and extracted the driver from the upside down vehicle and secured her in an ambulance.

A witness approached one of the investigators and said his security camera recorded the crash. She played the video on her cell phone and showed it to the police officer.

Security video showed the Equinox was heading south on 16th Street at 1:27 p.m. when it collided with a gray Ford Freestyle, parked in the 4600 block of 16th Street. The Equinox then left the camera’s field of view.

The witness said she heard the first impact, so she looked out the window of her house and saw the same vehicle hit a second vehicle, a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck.

The witness said the Equinox flew off, turned and landed on its roof.

An officer spoke with the suspect inside the ambulance. The officer said the woman smelled of alcohol and had difficulty speaking. She told police she had had a large beer earlier in the day.

Police said she was unable to perform field sobriety tests due to the injuries she sustained in the crash. She was taken to Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital for treatment. The woman consented to a blood test at the hospital. The kit was sent to the Michigan State Police Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis.

The woman was returned to hospital staff pending the results of the blood sample.
