LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Field hockey Bellarmine ended its season overwhelmingly at Frazier Stadium, beating Saint Francis 6-2 on the senior day.

The Knights have scored their most goals in a game in the Division I era and produced their biggest margin of victory since their transition to the DI. With this victory, BU ended its season 4-12 (2-5 MAC) including three victories in the last four games of the team.

After honoring Breanna McWhorter and Cassidy sweeney ahead of the game, that positive emotion spilled over into the start of the season finale. Bellarmine got the offense immediately with a Marit van der Bend goal just 39 seconds after the start of the match. Anna crump found van der Bend just to the left of the cage and she blew the ball into the upper right corner. Crump was credited with his third assist of the season.

Later in the first trimester, Amber Hofenk Jerembo scored a rebound, scoring his seventh goal of the season, a team-high. This gave Bellarmine a 2-0 lead early in the second period.

The Knights didn’t score again until 58 seconds left in the first half. Teresa schmidt recovered a rebound and scored his second goal of the season, pushing Bellarmine to a 3-0 halftime advantage.

BU picked up where it left off in the first half with a goal 51 seconds in the third quarter. Marit van der Bend struck again for his second goal of the day and fourth of the season. Julia Doorenbos centered a pass in front of the cage and van der Bend didn’t miss the shot, pushing Bellarmine’s lead to 4-0.

After collecting her fourth assist of the year, Doornebos herself netted a goal five minutes after the third quarter. To the right of the goal and just inside the circle, she shot the ball into the top left corner of the cage. Despite the very difficult shot, Doornebos scored his third goal of the year and Bellarmine led 5-0.

Saint Francis picked up one a few minutes later as Eva Valentini slipped a ball through traffic to bring the score to 5-1. But in the 38e minute, the Knights scored their third goal of the third period Peyton hobson spun past the cage and threw the ball for a 6-1 lead for the Knights.

The Red Flash got a late goal from Julia Breneman, but it was too late for the visitors. Bellarmine took a 6-2 victory on the senior matchday.

McWhorter was fabulous in goal in her last game, making 13 saves – her second biggest this season. The MAC’s two-time defensive player of the week ended her season with a career-high 138 saves. During his four years at Bellarmine, McWhorter made 308 saves, placing second in Knights history.

With his goal against Saint Francis, Hofenk Jerembo ended his season with one goal in four of his last five games.

Hofenk Jerembo led the Knights in goals this season (seven), Schmidt produced the most assists (five), while Anna crump took the most hits (30).
